FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - Health Checks
Health Clearances required for an Australian Visa
General Information
Australia enjoys some of the best health standards in the world and
in order to help maintain these standards you must satisfy the
Immigration Department health requirements before you can be granted
a visa for more than 3 months stay in Australia.
All of our clients receive full and detailed instructions in writing
on where and how to undertake their medical and x-ray examinations.
You can Contact Our Office and request the appropriate information on
Australian health requirements, forms, fees and contact details for
available doctors.
The health criteria each require that you and your family members
are:
- Fee from tuberculosis.
- Free from a disease or condition that is, or may result in the
applicant being, a threat to public health in Australia or a danger
to the Australian community.
- Not a person who has a disease or condition that, during the
proposed period of stay in Australia, would be likely to result in a
significant cost (approximately AUD$20,000) to the Australian
community in the areas of health care or community services; or
prejudice the access of an Australian citizen or permanent resident
to health care or community services (regardless of your level of
wealth or private care intended).
Please note that no health condition, with the exception of
tuberculosis, automatically prevents the issue of a visa. Every
condition will be individually considered for possible impact on the
Australian community, including the costs of treatment that would
usually be needed to treat that condition.
We recommend if you or any family members are aware of any medical
conditions, then you should contact our office before you undertake
any medical examinations for an Australian visa application. We can
advise you on how best to prepare for your medical examination, and
in some instances refer you to medical specialists who may be able to
assist with the preparation of your medical application.
Dependants and family members who are included in the visa
application are individually required to satisfy health requirements.
The refusal of one family member will mean the whole family unit will
not be able to proceed. Medical examinations and x-rays are conducted
by qualified doctors and radiologists usually nominated by the
Immigration Department.
Visitor Visas
If you are visiting Australia you are required to declare your health
status on your visa application form (ETA visas are exempt). You may
be asked to undertake a medical examination if any one of the
following applies:
- You are aged 70 years old or older.
- The parent of an Australian and your migration application has been
"queued" and you intend to stay for more than 6 months.
- You are likely to enter an Australian hospital or nursing home.
- You are likely to enter an Australian classroom environment.
- You are known to have a medical condition, regardless of your
length of stay.
- You intend to stay in Australia for more than 3 months, and you
have recently visited a country with a high-risk rate of
tuberculosis.
You can contact our office and request the appropriate information on
Australian health requirements, forms, fees and contact details for
available doctors.
Temporary Visas
If you are applying for temporary visa you may also be required to
undergo medical evaluation and/or X-rays if:
- You are working in the hospitality industry (chefs/cooks).
- Likely to enter a hospital or nursing home as a patient, visitor or
employee.
- Likely to enter a classroom environment.
- Known or suspected of having a medical condition, regardless of
your length of stay.
- Intending to stay in Australia for more than 12 months.
- Intending to stay in Australia for more than 3 months, and you have
recently visited or lived in a country with a High-risk rate of
tuberculosis (Tb).
You can contact our office and request the appropriate information on
Australian health requirements, forms, fees and contact details for
available doctors.
Permanent Visas
The Immigration Department requires all people applying to migrate to
Australia permanently to undergo comprehensive and strict health
checks before coming to Australia. You and all dependent family
members must meet strict health standards, including dependent family
members who do not intend to migrate.
If you or any family members have a known health condition, then we
strongly recommend you undertake Health Clearances before you lodge
your permanent visa application. Why go to the expense and hassle of
preparing a visa application that is likely to fail on health
grounds? We can check your medical application with the Australian
Immigration Department & Medical Specialists before you even start
your visa application, to see whether or not you are likely to pass,
and we can advise you on grounds of appeal if it is likely to fail.
Please contact our office if you require any information on the
appropriate information on Australian health requirements, forms,
fees and contact details for available doctors.
